I never considered a career in animation until I was about 18 or 19 years old. I got my high school degree in IT management and network engineering when I realized that this was not the career for me. At this time I had a long sit down for myself to think about what I enjoyed in life, and it basically came down to doing something creative. Drawing was something I did most of my spare time since I was about four, so I visited the School of Arts in Utrecht (HKU) and just looked around for programs to apply for. This is were I found out that they had an animation program and it was an eyeopener.
I ended up not going to the animation program (since there were so many people applying, I got rejected during the first round), but got accepted in a similar kind of program that focused on storytelling trough new media. In this program there was an animation class, and once I animated my first bouncing ball I was hooked. I was animating 24/7 just to get better and in the third year I got an animation internship at DNA productions where I worked on the film The Ant Bully
After my internship I moved back to the Netherlands again to finish my school and earned my Masters Degree in Computer Animation. At the moment I’m very fortunate to be working at the best game studio in the Netherlands, Guerrilla Games. It’s a great place filled with awesome people. Last year we wrapped working in the Playstation 3 flagship title Killzone 2. I would love to return to film one day, but I'm also very happy at the moment living in Amsterdam with my girlfriend Chantal.
We'll see what the future has in mind for me...
